I always tell guys that they have a choice in conversation. They can either find that "one thing" to say to extend conversation or they can just not say anything. Saying nothing usually garners more success for them (maybe because what they actually say may hurt them more) and they begin to realize that allowing the woman to speak up more is actually an indication of interest within itself. Shutting up isn't so bad sometimes... There is a huge difference between shutting up because you’re chill and shutting up because you don’t know what to say.
