I’ve never really been the kind of guy who reads a lot of pick-up books - I prefer to learn from experience. But there have been a number of books that I have read in my life that have given me interesting and valuable insight into life and relationships. Most of these books, rather than being self-help or pickup-related instructional manuals, have been well-written pieces of fiction or autobiographies.
Now, I want to warn you guys - this is not a “how to” book on picking up girls. In fact, it’s quite the opposite; Hank Chinaski is a jerk and a loser who manages (occasionally) to fall ass-backwards into the arms of beautiful (and not so beautiful) women. But if you’ve ever seen a great girl dating a complete asshole, and wondered to yourself “what the hell is she doing with him?” Women by Charles Bukowski will provide you with an interesting explanation.
Finally, Bukowski is considered one of the great American writers of the 20th century, and his books are required reading for anyone who considers themselves well read.

That’s really interesting that you brought up Bukowski… he’s been somewhat of a hero for me, starting when I was introduced to him 5 years ago. His manner of writing, and living, is so liberating. I think his popularity stems from the feelings he conveys to his readers, whether you like him or not, you feel him.
