So a lot of guys have been asking me how the CBC -TV (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) interview went. All in all, it went pretty good. Graeme, the journalist who was filming me was a nice guy and cool to work with.

I must admit, I was pretty anxious. Not only is my face going to be on TV as a “Pick Up Artist”, but I’ve had some mixed experience with journalists. I don’t want to go into it in too much detail, but there’s a gay-pride, grass skirt, reality-show dare memory that I don’t want to relive. Nuff said.

The interview started at Graeme’s apartment, where I met his roomates. They all seemed like classic Montrealers, laid-back, friendly and slightly bohemian. Good journalists have an excellent quality of being able to make you feel comfortable and open up to them, and Graeme had a good dose of that. The item he was filming was only going to be about 4 minutes long, so I had the challenge of summing up the better part of the Mystery method in 2 minutes, and then getting 2 minutes of good footage of us picking up girls.

In retrospect, I should have known that a cold Sunday night in January was probably not the ideal situation in which to pick up girls on television. The first couple places we went to were dead, and when we finally found a bar that had some people in it, getting camera angles and making sure the sound was good was a huge challenge. Picking up on Sundays is hard enough as it is, without dealing with all that extra crap.

In the end, I had two good sets, one with a bunch of girls who were really sweet but not exactly the level of hotness that I would like to be seen on television with. And another set that went really well with a beautiful girl from Toronto. Unfortunately when the time came, we couldn’t find the cutie from Toronto to get her to sign the release. So in the end, we had a lot of good footage of me sarging some fives. Sigh….

Graeme and I called it a night, and were going to meet up the next day to do some pickup in a Starbucks or something, because I wanted him to have some better footage of me. The next day he texted me to say that he had gone out after I left, and got some good footage. I would have liked to be there to see it, but hey.

So now we wait… I’ll tell you guys when it comes out.

I got a call today from the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). They want to film me for a show on dating and nightlife in Montreal, and have me give some tips on picking up girls. Since it sounds like fun, I’m probably going to meet with one of the producers this weekend and get my face on TV. Woo.

Now, every time someone from the pickup community does something like this, people freak out. Posts start popping up everywhere about “is the word going to get out” and suddenly the stuff we teach isn’t going to work.

First of all, this whole issue lies on a false assumption – that the MM is about feeding guys a bunch of lines. It is not.

At the core, what we teach is how to act like a cool person. We just explain it in (dorky sounding), formulaic terms. And because we teach guys to develop their *OWN* stories, strategies and techniques, so that they’ll have an unlimited supply of things to say.

People have been worrying about the game being exposed forever, and it’s never going to happen. Sure, a few of the cheesier lines that guys use like who lies more, or (I hate this line) “Hey, I need a female opinion on something”, are going to get played out, but the core elements of what we teach will always work.

Besides, there actually aren’t that many guys worldwide who are going around opening with opinion openers. If you look at the life cycle of your average community guy, it goes something like this.

Stage 1: Reads online, but doesn’t open.
Stage 2: Starts opening, opens lots of sets and builds confidence.
Stage 3: Finally gets good, only opens a few sets a night, and develops his own openers.

Only the guys in stage two are using opinion openers, and they’re a small minority of the total number of guys in the community.

So anyways, for those of you guys who are afraid that “game” is played out, go out and talk to some women. If you do, you’ll realize very quickly that this stuff works. Period.

I want to talk a bit about peacocking because I think it’s a topic that needs explaining.

There’s a misconception out there that peacocking means wearing the most outrageous and attention grabbing stuff you can get your hands on. I disagree.

Peacocking is about grabbing people’s attention, and being unafraid to stand out. It means being bold, and taking a risk with your clothes. It means dressing in a way that is exciting and edgy.

Most importantly, peacocking should convey WHO YOU ARE.

Screw top-hats, and black nails. Those things work for Mystery, goths and others who fit into that scene. If you’re not a Magician or a goth, you don’t need these things, you need your own style. Me, I wear a blazer with graffiti on it, I have a fleur-de-lys tie for a belt, and I wear flashy designer shirts and jeans. I have an eyebrow ring, and my hair is done in that messy-but-cool kind of way.

My style reflects who I am – a 25 year old musician (amateur, of course), dressed better and more successful than most guys in that scene. A girl in Las Vegas described it perfectly last weekend as “hipster businessman”. I don’t wear black nails, or top-hats or new-rock boots because that doesn’t reflect who I am. I do, however, wear some of the flashiest stuff that DOES reflect who I am.

So, before you go out and peacock, you have to think, what am I trying to convey? I did a fashion consultation with a student in Toronto this November, who was a defense analyst. I thought to myself “what does a defense analyst wear?”. So Sinn and I took him out and we found some great clothes that had just a hint of military to them. We didn’t dress him up in Army Surplus gear, but in some nice medium to high-end clothes that had a bit of military influence.

At the end of our fashion consultation, he looked like a cool, downtown, hip guy, with a rugged, military edge, which goes perfect with his profession as a defense analyst, and with his lifestyle as a outdoorsy kind of guy. The military element made him stand out in a crowd, but it was congruent and cool.

Ahh, it’s nice to finally be back in Toronto. Doing a bootcamp in your hometown is a lot more fun than being on the road all the time.

First of all, when you go out sarging, there’s actually a possibility of having a real relationship with a girl, instead of just a one night stand. Plus, you don’t have crazy time constraints like “I’m flying out tomorrow, can we get together TONIGHT?”.

Sigh…. Maybe I’m just getting old

So I’m finally back from Las Vegas, getting ready for my upcoming Toronto Bootcamp (some seats are still available, FYI), but I have one more idea from Las Vegas that I want to share with my readers.

The picture on the left here is a blackjack strategy card. It tells you what is statistically the best move to make in any situation you will face at a blackjack table. If you follow it faithfully, you can bring your odds at blackjack up to around 49% vs the dealer’s 51%.

In a sense, this strategy card is a lot like what I teach my students at blackjack. The mystery method teaches guys what are statistically the best strategies for any given situation. Now, that doesn’t mean that you can’t open with “Hey baby, wanna come back to my place”, but statistically, that’s a lousy strategy. Even guys with bad strategies get women, just like you can hit on a 17, and sometimes you’ll draw a 4.

The thing with blackjack though is that this strategy is fixed, you can’t influence the card you’re dealt, or affect chance. But with women, it works differently. Not only can you change the cards in your deck by improving your lifestyle and the way you present yourself, but you can hit on a hard 17 and be pretty confident you’re going to draw a 4.

So I dropped Olga off at the airport last night. This was the first time I’d gone on a trip with someone I was dating, and it was a good experience.

It was interesting though to spend a week with her and to see the way she interacts with the world and with men. In many ways, her life is typical of many beautiful women you will meet.

First of all, you can’t leave her alone at a bar for a minute before some chode (my generic term for any guy I don’t respect) comes and hits on her. If I turn around to get a beer, some dude is grinding up next to her in 30 seconds. When she went to the parking lot to drop off some clothes she had bought, some guy offered her $1,000 for sex.

No wonder a lot of beautiful women can have a cynical attitude about men. No wonder they travel in groups, and go to the bathroom together. The average guy acts pretty lame around her, and a small number of guys act downright creepy. It was strange enough to experience this for a week, but Olga has dealt with this since she was 14 years old.

What makes the Mystery Method so powerful is that for all the guys who incompetently hit on her, I never saw a guy actually do a smooth approach. Every guy who says “you’re pretty” as the first thing out of his mouth, or leans in, just makes it more remarkable when one of my students approaches the way you’re SUPPOSED to approach
